From continental podiums to Sydney 2032 dreams, Grade 10 swimmer Matthew Goller proves you can excel in the pool and the classroom.
Sports flexibility
Hybrid learning

In the high-stakes world of competitive swimming, the difference between a podium finish and a "better luck next time" is measured in milliseconds. For Matthew Goller, a Grade 10 student in Hatfield Online School, those milliseconds are regularly shaved off with surgical precision.
Matthew is both a professional athlete-in-the-making, and a high school student navigating the rigours of the IEB curriculum. For Matthew to be successful in both endeavours, he needed a specific kind of environment. Hatfield Online School’s flexible online model has become the launchpad for Matthew’s ambitions in both the water and the classroom.

A Year of Continental Dominance
The past 18 months have been a whirlwind for the young freestyle specialist. Matthew’s trophy cabinet has seen an influx of recent acquirements following a string of stellar performances:
December 2025 – Africa Games (Angola): Matthew truly announced himself on the international stage, securing four Gold medals (200m, 400m, 800m free, and the 4x200m relay) and a Silver in the 1500m. His efforts earned him the "Best Performance" award of the prestigious event.
March 2026 – SA Junior Nationals: He dominated (and won) the 16-year-old age group, taking the podium in the 200m, 400m, and 1500m freestyle events.
April 2026 – SA Senior Nationals: Testing himself against the “big guns” of South African swimming, and against adults in the open age group, Matthew won the B finals in both the 200m and 400m freestyle. His times were so competitive they placed him 6th overall in South Africa across both A and B finals combined.
May 2026 – Africa Aquatics Championships (Algeria): Most recently, Matthew returned from Algeria with a Bronze in the 400m free and a Silver in the 2x200m relay, proving his consistency at the highest level of African swimming.
New Coach, New Focus, New Season
Matthew is entering a new and exciting chapter in his swimming career. Following the departure of his previous coach to the US, he has joined forces with the legendary Rocco Meiring—the mastermind behind some of South Africa’s greatest Olympic triumphs.
Under Meiring’s guidance, Matthew is making a strategic pivot. While he has historically excelled in the gruelling long-distance events, his focus is shifting toward the mid-distance events (200m and 400m). This change is designed to harness his explosive power and tactical speed, positioning him as a major threat in the most competitive freestyle disciplines.
The Road to Sydney 2032
While many young sports stars burn out by trying to do too much too soon, Matthew and his team are playing the long game. He is part of the South African Olympic Squad Swimming Program, and while LA 2028 remains a possibility, the primary target is Sydney 2032.
This eight-year plan will support Matthew’s dream of achieving global swimming domination, whilst simultaneously conquering his academic goals. The flexibility offered by Hatfield Online School enables him to do both!
"At Hatfield Online School, we believe that a world-class education shouldn't be the 'backup plan'—it should run parallel to the dream," says the school's leadership.
For Matthew Goller, the water is his office, but the virtual classroom is where he builds his future. As he dives into this first full season with Coach Meiring, one thing is certain: whether it’s a gold medal or a high-quality matric certificate, Matthew is swimming toward excellence with everything he’s got.
Watch this space—the tide is definitely coming in.
